N800 I hate smart phone web browsers. They never seem to work with the one web page I need. Plus the screens are so small as to be almost unreadable. That is where the Nokia N800 internet tablet enters the picture. The N800 features a crisp 800×480 display and the Firefox web browser we all know and love. It was designed from the beginning to complement your cell phone. Below I will explain how to couple your N800 with your bluetooth phone so you have full internet access when you are out of range of a wifi hot spot without having to pay for a data plan from your cell phone provider.

Step one: Pair your cell phone to the N800

We have to pair the N800 with your cell phone. If you have used the N800 before with a wifi hotspot you might be tempted to try and configure this through the connection settings on the control panel. Unfortunately the N800 will only show you wifi hot spots and not bluetooth devices in range. You have to manually setup the connection to the phone. Goto the Control Panel, under Settings and select Phone. Make sure you have your cell phone set to discovery mode so the N800 can find it. On my Samsung SCH-A990 the pass code is ‘0000’. It may be different on your phone. Check your manual.

Step Two: Setting up the connection profile

Once you have the N800 and your phone successfully paired the N800 will launch the Operator setup wizard. Press next and select the country you are located in. Finally select your wireless provider. That should do it. When you go to your connection settings with the phone in range a connection named after the wireless provider you selected should be available. You may still need to provide a user name and password before making a connection to the internet. Unfortunately this information is different for each provider. I can tell you that for verizon wireless the user name is your phone number (333-333-333) @vzw3g.com. In this example it would be 3333333333@vzw3g.com. The password is “vzw”. No quotes.

Trouble Shooting:

I’m going to post a couple of gotcha’s that I ran into with my phone. I doubt these will be useful to everyone but they might point you in the right direction.

  1. When using verizon wireless as your provider you have to force your cell phone into CDMA 1x mode. To do this goto the setting menu and press #. You will be asked for a code. It is “000000”. Then goto Pref Setting (Option 6) and select CDMA Only mode. This may only apply to the Samsung SCH series of phones.
  2. I had to go into Settings > Phone Settings > PC Connetion and change it to Bluetooth before I could establish a connection.
