I’ll admit. I was a little late to the show on this one. Apparently Everex, you know those guys selling PCs at Wallmart, has announced a Mac Mini competitor. Who knew? Too bad I hate Mallfart. Anyway, beside my opinon of Walmart, read on to see the specs.

The Everex Mini comes equipped with a 1.86GHZ Intel Pentium Dual Core Mobile Processor, a 120GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM, a built in DVDRW and Intel GMA950 graphics. Not bad. About the same as a Mac mini.

It also includes a Realtek ALC268 High Definition Audio chipset, Ethernet, DVI-I, S-Video, Firewire, 4 USB ports and a built in 4 in 1 media card reader. The Everex gPC Mini runs gOS. Remember that gOS is a Google centric version of Ubuntu so it also comes with several open source programs such as OpenOffice, Firefox, GIMP, and others. The Everex gPC Mini will go on sale in March for $499.

For $499 it is a little pricey compared to the Mac Mini. Its only a hundred bucks lower then the similarly equipped Mac Mini which includes double the RAM in trade for the card reader. I’ll wait for this to hit eBay before jumping in. I think it would make a good Mythtv front end.Read more
