Full MythTv Frontend on the N810

Yes folks, we have all dreamed of it and it may soon be reality.  There is a semi-functional Mythtv Frontend, in alpha, built for the Nokia Internet Tablet.  With MythTv moving towards QT4 someone has ported the front end over to OS 2008.  It is not completely functional as of now but, it looks to be a good start.  Currently there is a port in works for the front end and back end.  Check out the teasers after the “click”.

Lirc being a pain?  Does your favorite universal remote NOT work with your new myth box. Mythetomer is a remote control application for your N800 or N810 to control your MythTv.  Mythetomer uses your WLAN or Bluetooth to make a connection to your Myth Frontend for full control.  No cables, no hours of configuring key mappings to remote codes and no IR learning. Record HDTV from component inputs.

If you arrived here through a google search to find out how to record an HDTV channel from component inputs all I can say is the wait for a device capable of doing this is nearly over. Hauppauge’s much-anticipated HD-PVR looks close to being released.

Hauppauge debuted their HD PVR, which can take a HD signal from its component inputs and transcode it to H.264 in real time for storage on your computer, at CES this year. What this will really allow you to do is bypass any restrictions on recording HDTV programs to your selected device. For me that finally means my full digital cable lineup will be available to my MythTV DVR. Granted this device will sit in the analog hole between your cable / direct tv receiver and your HDTV so, there will be a slight loss of quality due to that and the compression to H.264 but, this should still provide a quality picture. Even with this slightly loss of quality, the promise of opening up all HDTV channels on cable or satellite to any type higher quality recording, has been the holy grail for HTPC for a long time.

Hauppauge had planned to release this unit in Q1 of this year but, like all good things, it will come to those who wait.

Myth 0.21 is out. How did I miss this one?

In my defense I haven’t been reading the MythTV mailing list in a few days. I know, I’m a slacker. For those of you that don’t know, MythTV is a an open source software Personal Video Recorder project. It lets you build a box similar to a TiVo or ReplayTV, but much more powerful – and more easily modified. It is ideally suited to allow you to ditch that piece of … DVR from your cable company.

I’ve been using MythTV in one form or another for the better part of two years and I have been nothing but pleased. Granted you have to be semi decent at Linux and have the time to tweak the system but, if you do, you’ll be more then happy. I use it for whole house media distribution.

Installing a Mythtv OSX Frontend.

Install OSX and the Mythtv frontend on a clean system.
For Christmas this year I got an awesome gift of a Mac Mini core solo to use as a Mythtv frontend on my bedroom entertainment center. My brother had recently bought two of them and said they worked great. He configured the Mac against his own Mythtv system in Ohio and then shipped it too me in Florida. The unit booted fine when I got it but would not connect to my Mythtv backend. So I started from scratch and here’s how I did it.
